In 2021, the EBRD and IFC provided financing to support the Indorama Agro LLC (IAL) project in Uzbekistan, aimed at modernizing agriculture and boosting local economic opportunities. Given the project’s close ties with local communities, an assessment was needed to identify health, safety, and gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) risks, and to recommend mitigation measures. Together with EBRD and IFC, Indorama Agro is committed to managing GBVH risks across its operations, including workplaces, nearby communities, and contract farms, in line with international best practices.
The assessment focused on identifying risks to community health, safety, and GBVH in line with IFC and EBRD Performance Standards. It also reviewed progress on gender-related actions and aimed to support and improve the company’s existing Health and Safety Management Plan.
Key tasks included:
Reviewing company and legal documents
Assessing community health, safety, and security risks
Conducting a focused GBVH assessment
Strengthening related policies and procedures
Providing training and building internal capacity
Conducting interviews and site visits
Preparing reports and recommendations
Under this assignment, AVG conducted a health, safety and GBVH risk assessment in accordance with EBRD and IFC requirements, reviewed company documents and open sources, assessed community and vulnerable group risks, organised trainings, conducted interviews and site visits, assessed organisational capacity, summarised the results and provided recommendations for improving policies and management systems in line with international standards.
